Where was Private LLoyd D. Sublett killed in action?

Phase: The Sicilian Campaign

Company A:

Co. “A” was ordered to report all available men and vehicles to the CO, 41st AIR on the Canicatti road. When contact was made after dark, the mission assigned was to occupy the high ground en the north side of the pass two miles from Canicatti, the south side being held by the 3rd Bn, 41st . Fire from troops on right of the pass was received moving up, and enemy machine gun and small arms fire prevented the Platoons from occupying the high ridges. Two men were wounded. Early the next morning the 2nd Platoon blocked the pass with a minefield against an expected counterattack, and the Engrs remained with the Infantry to cover the field with fire. No action took place.

During that afternoon, 12 July, Canicatti was attacked and taken, one squad of Engrs following to gap any minefields encountered and the remainder of the company occupied the high ground south of the pass. The following morning, the company recovered its two squads from the 82nd Rcn and worked with the Combat Command reserve (1/66) out posting tanks in the vicinity of Naro.

That afternoon the company followed that Combat Command as it pulled back to a reserve position near Campobello. On 15 July the bridge Platoon arrived from Africa, The Engr Platoons maintained security patrols until 13 July, when orders were received to precede the division to the river two miles west of Siculiana and prepare a crossing by 0500 the next morning. Marching 50 miles that night, the site was reached at 0200 where it was found that the 82nd Airborne Div Engineers had railroad tunnel on the bypass; the job being completed at 0400, An additional crossing was prepared by using two bull dozers, and in the afternoon the platoons moved back to a bivouac area south of Agrigento. The bridge Platoon reverted to Division Trains. – Several mines were cleared and tank traps filled by the 2ndPlatoon that day in Porto Empedocle.

Company B:

The men on the ship “Oriz Arba” arrived at Gela, Sicily at 0400, 10 July, with CC. “B” in an area four miles northeast of Gela. There the force was counterattacked by approximately 35 German tanks at 1000, and in the fighting that followed some of the enemy armor reached positions within 400 yards of the Engr Company. However, 12 of the enemy tanks were destroyed and the enemy pushed back. There were numerous enemy bombing and strafing attacks throughout the day. During the evening of 11 July the 3rd Platoon came ashore, and throughout the night paratroopers landed in the bivouac area.

The 3rd Platoon placed a minefield on the forces east flank 12 July, where another tank battle was witnessed. Five Mark VI and two Mk IV tanks were knocked out in this operation against about an equal loss of our medium tanks. The 2nd Platoon went out to demolish the knocked-out tanks, but were driven back by artillery fire.

On 13 July the remainder of the company vehicles came ashore and the 3rd Platoon joined a Ranger Battalion and cleared six minefields on the road to Butera, searching several miles of road. The following day the 1st Platoon re-laid a minefield en the east flank, and the 2nd Platoon joined the 3rd Platoon in clearing the roads near Butera.
